My name is Sugihara, and I am a field leader for the operation and management of passenger carts and automated wheelchairs at the airport.
In addition to customer service duties on site, I am currently in charge of employee training, instructing passenger cart staff on how to drive and serve customers.
Since the airport is the gateway to Japan, I focus on in-house training to ensure that all staff members provide quality service.
I have many hobbies, but I like to travel and spend my holidays actively, camping in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.
ASAMI SUGIHARA
Airport Operations Company A / Airport Facilities Service Operations / Full-time employee, site leader
I have been working in the beauty industry for more than 10 years before I took my current position.
In order to provide treatment to customers, I always took inspiration from the scenery and colors of the city and used them in my work. In addition, I have experience in tenant operations, sales management, and staff training.
Currently, I am working in the airport service industry and am trying to become a leader in the company as a field leader, while maintaining good communication with other staff members and engaging in friendly competition.
How did you come to take on your current job?
I wanted to be involved in airport operations.
I have always loved airports and airplanes and often went to parks near airports to play. I also had “working in airport operations” on my list of things I wanted to do in my life, so when I was introduced to a job within the airport, I made the decision to leave my longtime job and joined the company.
At first, I could not imagine what kind of work I would be doing in the airport. However, I was impressed by the friendly and cheerful employees I met, and by their energetic talk about their visions for the future, and I decided that I wanted to work with them.
Of course, my interest in airport operations was the main reason for joining the company, but I value the impression of employees when choosing a job, so that was a deciding factor in my decision to join.
What attracts you to your current position?
Lots of new insights and discoveries.
I think that working in a special place like an airport is one of the most attractive things about it.
Being in contact with passengers from many different countries and cultures and languages, there are many new insights and discoveries to be made every day.
Being involved in the beginning and end of a foreigner’s trip to Japan, providing hospitality and putting a smile on their faces is a wonderful experience that can only be had here! Another advantage is that you can naturally learn languages in order to communicate with people. When I first joined the company, I did not have any language skills, but now I am able to speak with confidence.
Another advantage is that the staff working here are of a wide age range and many of them like traveling, airplanes, and airports, so we can share a variety of knowledge and useful information with each other.
What are your future goals?
Work to solve problems and seek managerial positions.
This year, I was promoted to field leader, and I am currently focusing on finding and solving problems in the field, such as conducting internal training to improve safety and service, and implementing projects to increase staff motivation.
I would like to gradually increase what I can do while cultivating my ability to communicate with others.
My immediate goal is to build a relationship of trust with staff as a field leader and establish my own position so that I can aim for a managerial or supervisory position in the future.
